The tremors, registering magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, were among the most powerful earthquakes to strike Venezuela in more than a century. The force of the quakes caused catastrophic damage, resulting in the collapse of multiple buildings, particularly across the coastal region of La Guaira, situated north of Caracas, as well as within the capital city itself.
The immediate aftermath brought staggering human loss and an overwhelming humanitarian crisis. News agencies reported that by noon Saturday, June 26th, authorities were dealing with at least 920 fatal victims and more than 51,000 missing persons, underscoring the immense scale of the disaster.
