Summertime officially kicks off with a vibrant pulse, and nowhere is that energy more palpable than in the realm of dancehall. As the heat rises, the sweet rhythms of Jamaican culture merge seamlessly with Nigerian flair, creating a sound that is both infectious and deeply resonant.
This summer, a powerful new project has emerged from this fusion: the dancehall-inspired mixtape Yard & Yanga. It’s a creative masterclass built on years of friendship and a shared vision, spearheaded by Nigerian pioneer Mr Eazi and celebrated dancehall superproducer Dre Skull.
The genesis of this project lies in the natural synergy between the two artists. Dre Skull helped define the sound of 2010s dancehall through landmark work, while Eazi drew inspiration from Nigeria’s dancehall-influenced artists to find his own voice. Their sessions in the studio naturally began weaving together elements of Dancehall and Afrobeats, evolving into something entirely new.
Dre Skull credits this evolution as a natural progression, noting that these creative sessions became the starting point for the entire project, allowing them to lean into shaping a larger artistic concept. Eazi, meanwhile, has drawn heavily from Nigerian dancehall artists like Baba Fryo and Kimi Ranky, incorporating raw energy into his music. His appreciation for the genre has grown into his signature catchphrase, “Zaggadat,” an homage to the style he loves.
The project’s lead single, “Lambo,” showcases this dynamic blend perfectly. It features King of Dancehall Vybz Kartel, who brings his unmistakable energy and slick wordplay, setting a hypnotic tone built on heavy low-end sounds that tap directly into street dance rhythms. Dre Skull notes that Kartel provides the perfect counterbalance to Eazi’s delivery.
Yard & Yanga marks a significant step in Eazi’s prolific career, joining his catalog of mixtapes including About to Blow and various installments of the Life Is Eazi series. The mixtape demonstrates a clear concept that felt both creatively fun and deeply connected to Eazi’s established sound.
Adding to the artistic depth is the visual representation of the work. The single’s cover art was hand-drawn by U.K.-based illustrator Kione Grandison, whose artwork draws inspiration from a rich tapestry of West African and Caribbean folk and street art, giving Yard & Yanga a distinctive cultural texture.
