  • Coldplay’s Early Studio Tapes, Unheard Chris Martin Bond Demo Head to Auction

There is a time for music history that deserves to be properly celebrated, and right now, an incredible window into the formative years of one of the world’s most beloved bands is being opened up for fans.

A rare archive of early Coldplay recordings—studio tapes, alternate mixes, and raw demos from the sessions that laid the groundwork for their debut album, Parachutes—is heading to auction this week. This collection offers an intimate look at the band before they became global stadium titans.

The centerpiece of this trove comes from British producer, mixer, and engineer Chris Allison. The bulk of the material centers on the pivotal “Blue Room” sessions recorded at London’s Orinoco Studios, shortly after Coldplay signed their deal with Parlophone.

This material isn’t just old recordings; it is a genuine historical document. It provides a peek into the creative process that shaped tracks like “High Speed,” which ultimately appeared on the album without Allison’s direct production, and the initial surfacing of the song on the Blue Room EP.

Beyond the main sessions, the collection features intriguing extras: original DAT mixes, previously unheard alternate versions of songs, a take of “We Never Change” that has never been officially released, and even a nine-track cassette holding some of the band’s earliest known recordings—including two tracks that never saw release.

Adding to the mystery is an unusually personal artifact: an acoustic demo where Chris Martin recorded a pitch for the title song of the 1999 James Bond film, The World Is Not Enough. Though this version was never released or documented, it hints at the creative connections that flowed around the band.

Allison noted that this archive is more than just tapes; it’s a window into the writing, recording, production, and promotion of uniquely celebrated artists, ensuring these pieces of music history don’t gather dust in storage units but find new homes with dedicated fans.

Parachutes was released in July 2000 and quickly became a monumental success, achieving double platinum status and winning a Grammy for best alternative music. From that moment on, Coldplay transitioned into one of the century’s defining stadium acts, setting records for album sales and touring revenue.

What makes this auction particularly compelling is the charitable angle: a percentage of the proceeds will be earmarked for Restore the Music, an organization dedicated to funding instruments and equipment in under-resourced state schools. It’s a fantastic opportunity to support both musical history and education simultaneously.
