SZA Inducted Into NJ Hall of Fame by Danny DeVito

The music world was celebrating a remarkable talent on Thursday as singer SZA was inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame, recognized in the Performing Arts & Entertainment category at the organization’s 18th annual induction ceremony.

The evening was filled with warmth and nostalgia, particularly as the ceremony was hosted by fellow New Jersey native Danny DeVito at the Dream Live Performing Arts Center at American Dream in East Rutherford. SZA brought a delightful blend of genuine humility and playful charm to the occasion.

Reflecting on the honor, SZA shared a deeply personal moment with the audience. She noted that the induction was meaningful, especially recognizing the community that supported her journey. She credited the local community that raised her, mentioning that she grew up in a small town where everyone knew each other’s names, emphasizing her love for community, and promised to carry that energy across the globe.

Her acceptance speech also provided a wonderful shout-out to fellow Columbia High School alumna Lauryn Hill who has not yet been inducted, and she addressed the importance of regional pride. She made a pointed observation, noting that while attention often flows toward New York, people miss the true “heartbeat of the tri-state,” advocating for recognition of the unique identity of places like New Jersey.

SZA joins an impressive roster of figures honored in the New Jersey Hall of Fame, which includes legends such as Whitney Houston, Bruce Springsteen, Frank Sinatra, Queen Latifah, the Jonas Brothers, Wyclef Jean, and the Isley Brothers, among others. The group includes the original inductee, Danny DeVito, who was honored in 2010.

SZA’s career trajectory has been nothing short of meteoric. She first burst onto the scene with her 2017 debut album, Ctrl”>Ctrl, which successfully hit the Billboard 200 at number three and achieved triple platinum certification. This success led to the even more dominant follow-up, SOS”>SOS, which debuted at number one and spent thirteen nonconsecutive weeks atop the charts.

The impact of her music is undeniable; her single “Kill Bill” became one of two songs in her catalog to earn RIAA diamond certification. A multi-award winner, SZA has amassed more than 70 billion career streams, cementing her status as one of the most commercially dominant artists of her generation. This achievement is further celebrated by her recognition as a seven-time Grammy winner and her recent award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame’s Hal David Starlight Award.
