Sugababes reunite for new album after 26 years

For a trio that has defined a generation of pop music, the wait has finally ended. Sugababes, the original powerhouse group, are set to release a self-titled album, marking their first studio work together in twenty-six years.

Scheduled for release on February 12 via Sacred Three/The Orchard, this record offers a deeply personal exploration of the group’s enduring sound while bravely venturing into new emotional and sonic territory.

The album is a testament to the bond between the original members: Mutya Buena, Siobhán Donaghy, and Keisha Buchanan. It marks a significant moment, building on the legacy of their debut, One Touch, released in 2000.

The twelve tracks on the new album are a creative tapestry, penned by the members alongside some of the UK’s most celebrated songwriters and producers. This collaboration allows the group to tap into their established R&B/pop sensibilities while introducing innovative elements that redefine their sound.

The sonic journey moves beyond familiar boundaries. Tracks like Modern Love incorporates garage influences, After All embraces the rhythms of Amapiano, Scorpio adds a burst of dance energy, and Love Language features sweeping orchestral arrangements, demonstrating a masterful blend of the familiar and the fresh.

The album’s arrival is heralded by the immediate release of the lead single, Ghost. This captivating track, co-written by Jon Shave (of Charli XCX fame) and Wayne Hector (of Tate McRae), delves into the complex feeling of wanting to end a relationship while being unable to escape the emotional tether.

The trio emphasized that they approached this record with a focus on authenticity and unity. “We knew from the beginning that we didn’t want to rush this record,” they shared. “We’ve poured so much into the songs, the sound and every detail around it, and the more it came together, the clearer it became that there was only one thing we could call it: Sugababes. It feels unmistakably us.”

Beyond the music, the project resonated with the group’s core philosophy of being a band about unity and authenticity. This theme was powerfully echoed when the trio joined a massive lineup for the Trans Mission show at Wembley Arena. Sharing the stage with artists like Wolf Alice, Adam Lambert, and Kae Tempest underscored their message of bringing people together.

As the record unfolds, it promises evolution and reflection. It will also feature a striking cover shot by photographer Liz Collins, who previously captured the look of their debut album, One Touch.
