Suede’s anarcho-punk album: Songs of tribes and belonging

Suede are deep into crafting their next musical statement, revealing that the band is immersed in the creation of what they are calling their “anarcho-punk” record. This new project continues a rich lineage of artistic ambition, delving into the core philosophy of what it means to build an album that truly resonates.

The conversation, shared at the recent Mercury Prize 2026 event, touched upon the magic of classic LPs. Frontman Brett Anderson reflected that the act of creating an album is his life’s biggest obsession, emphasizing the importance of the holistic listening experience. He stressed that an album must take the listener somewhere, offering a journey that leaves a lasting impression, much like the landscape of records such as Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures or Brian Eno’s Music For Airports.

Anderson noted that the true art lies in sequencing the experience—from the first side to the final track—suggesting that every part of the record holds vital emotional weight. This focus on comprehensive composition reflects Suede’s commitment to their craft, positioning album creation as a supreme artform of the 20th century.

This dedication to form mirrors their current creative trajectory. The new work is positioned as the third installment in a sonic trilogy, following their seminal Autofiction and the post-punk powerhouse Antidepressants. Guitarist Neil Codling confirmed that the new material aims to be more anthemic, focusing on simple, song-based structures while maintaining the raw energy of their earlier work.

Anderson elaborated on the new sound, hinting at a shift toward broader messaging. He suggested the album is rooted in themes of “tribes and belonging,” aiming to communicate these ideas in simplistic, blunt terms, essentially serving as a broad instrument for modern discourse. Drummer Simon Gilbert added that the band is exploring sounds that blend elements of anarcho-punk and even steam punk, seeking a genre that allows for broad understanding.

As Suede move forward, they are also connecting with other titans of rock. The band is currently embarking on a co-headline UK arena tour with the Manic Street Preachers. This collaboration, they noted, felt like a relaxed opportunity, described by Gilbert as “going on holiday with your mates,” highlighting the genuine, shared camaraderie between the Welsh icons.

The upcoming tour, kicking off at Glasgow OVO Arena, promises a dynamic blend of established legacy and emerging punk energy. Fans can anticipate hearing new perspectives on belonging and rebellion as Suede and the Manics share the stage, bringing their compelling story to a wider audience.
