Sting narrates the story of Godfather composer Nino Rota
The world of cinematic music is about to get a soulful spotlight. Sting is set to narrate a captivating new documentary portrait of the legendary Italian composer, Nino Rota, an artist whose melodies have woven themselves seamlessly into the fabric of global cinema and the timeless beauty of the concert hall.
Titled Nino – Un Film Su Nino Rota>, the film, directed by Walter Fasano, promises far more than a conventional biography. Instead of a simple chronological journey, the documentary adopts a free and associative approach, digging into the personal, artistic, and spiritual connections that defined a man who poured his entire being into music.
This is a deep dive into the man behind the unforgettable scores that accompanied masterpieces like Federico Fellini’s La Dolce Vita> and 8½, as well as Francis Ford Coppola’s epic The Godfather>. The film weaves together photographs and archival materials with intimate interviews, illuminating a composer whose influence stretches far beyond the films that made him famous.
Rota was a precocious musical talent who honed his craft studying under masters like Ildebrando Pizzetti, Alfredo Casella, and Rosario Scalero before making his mark in cinema. His prolific career included composing around 150 film scores, collaborating with giants like Luchino Visconti on The Leopard> and Franco Zeffirelli on Romeo and Juliet>.
While his work spanned numerous collaborations, it was his association with Fellini that brought him to global renown, featuring scores for iconic films such as La Strada>, Nights of Cabiria>, and the glittering La Dolce Vita>.
Rota’s international breakthrough was cemented by his contributions to the genre’s most celebrated moments. His score for The Godfather Part II> earned him the coveted Academy Award for Best Original Score, solidifying his status as a defining film composer of his era.
The documentary seeks to explore the man behind these unmistakable melodies. Director Fasano paints a portrait of Rota as simultaneously “warm, reserved and famously absent-minded,” yet profoundly self-aware and uncompromising. Fasano believes the extraordinary nature of Rota’s music demands that the documentary’s role is less about explaining the music than about creating a space for it to be heard and felt.
