Stef Chura swings R.E.M.’s Buck Mills

Seven years is a long time to wait for a new musical chapter, but for Detroit singer-songwriter Stef Chura, it’s time to dive headfirst into her latest work. She is back with her debut album Dancing Alone on the Concrete, and this time, she didn’t come alone—she brought along two titans of rock history to share the ride.

The album kicks off with the single “Danny”, a track that sparkles with classic Athens melancholy while centering on Chura’s most hopeful songwriting yet. But what makes this release particularly electric is the unexpected guest performance from R.E.M. legends Peter Buck and Mike Mills.

This collaboration wasn’t forced; it happened organically in the recording studio in Athens, Georgia. During the sessions at Chase Park Transduction, producer Robert Schneider, Chura, and her collaborators spontaneously decided to let the legends contribute. One producer noted that he simply asked, “Wouldn’t this sound great with Mike Mills playing bass on it?” And just like that, a magical sonic connection was forged.

The resulting track seamlessly blends timeless rock sensibility with a sense of fleeting excitement. “Danny” itself is an ode to the fantasy of finding a connection that sweeps you off your feet—a feeling Chura described as something she sought after meeting someone during a period of solitude and longing.

The inspiration for the song came from a moment when she relocated to New Orleans during the COVID lockdowns. She met someone who was traveling through the city, sparking an instant rapport and reminding her what pure excitement felt like. Chura channeled that feeling into “Danny,” imagining the version of herself who seized that moment and embraced the possibility.

Dancing Alone on the Concrete serves as a deeply personal reflection for Chura. The journey to this album reflects life’s beautiful, messy transitions: ending an engagement, moving between cities like Detroit and New Orleans, becoming a mother, and finding her footing again. In those years, she found new ways to express herself, learning to transpose chords while playing the piano and guitar, which naturally fed her writing process.

These creative sessions eventually led her to Athens, where she teamed up with engineers David Barbe (Sugar) and Andy LeMaster (Now It’s Overhead). When R.E.M.’s Peter Buck and Mike Mills joined in on “Danny,” they lent the track an unmistakable layer of history and warmth.

Fans can expect to hear this fresh blend of contemporary songwriting and legendary rock pedigree on October 2, when Dancing Alone on the Concrete drops. And the journey doesn’t end there: Chura will be taking the stage for Dinosaur Jr. on a fall North American tour starting October 9 in Las Vegas.
