Songwriting is a feeling not a formula

From the vibrant streets of Lisbon, Portugal, comes MARO, a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer whose sound manages to blend the classical sophistication of jazz and guitar with the irresistible energy of pop. Having honed her craft at Berklee College of Music, MARO has amassed nine albums and two EPs, building a catalogue that is both deeply personal and incredibly expansive.

Her talent hasn’t stayed confined to Portugal. MARO has shared the stage with some of the industry’s biggest names, collaborating with artists like Jacob Collier, ODESZA, Charlotte Cardin, Parcels, and Shawn Mendes, demonstrating a remarkable ability to bridge musical worlds.

The reach of her artistry extends far beyond music. MARO represented her country on the Eurovision stage, making it to the Top 10 as a finalist, and her influence is recognized globally, as she was named one of the Top 10 female artists featured on Spotify’s Wrapped.

When discussing the genesis of her unique sound, MARO points to a natural absorption of diverse musical influences. She believes the fusion of classical guitar and jazz gives her music its distinct flavor, a combination that stems from everything she grew up listening to.

In the studio, MARO approaches creation with a fluid philosophy. She finds that the voice and the instrumental arrangements often work hand-in-hand, feeling the need to sing along with whatever she is playing. She trusts the feeling of a song, allowing it to guide the entire production, recognizing that if a track hits the spot, it doesn’t need excess.

This creative journey is also multilingual. MARO navigates the world of music and language, naturally shifting between Portuguese and English depending on her environment, though she is actively exploring incorporating translations into her future work.

Her connections extend to legendary figures in music. She met Jacob Collier, who inspired their collaborative track “Lua“, and shared memorable moments with Eric Clapton, showcasing a genuine appreciation for the magic that comes from working alongside admired artists.

The life of a touring artist is demanding, but MARO maintains a commitment to holistic well-being. For her, staying grounded on the road involves prioritizing sleep, healthy eating, regular workouts, and spending time outdoors. Crucially, she emphasizes that having a team that feels like family is essential for keeping her mind sharp and supported.

On tour, when the music is at its peak, MARO describes the feeling as being incredibly present and happy—a shared connection where everyone joins the same frequency. Ultimately, while she doesn’t have a single definitive answer for what she means to her, she names love as the most powerful force in the world.
