Sombr, RAYE, Lambert, Swims tribute George Michael at VMAs

The MTV VMAs stage recently became a powerful memorial, celebrating the enduring legacy of pop icon George Michael. On September 27th, the event hosted a star-studded tribute that reminded everyone why George Michael remains a global phenomenon.

The performance, held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, was a masterclass in musical homage, featuring a dynamic lineup of artists including Sombr, RAYE, Adam Lambert, and Teddy Swims.

The evening began with an introduction by Orville Peck, who framed Michael’s career as that of a “pop god” who became an international superstar at just nineteen, crafting anthems that spoke powerfully against the establishment.

The tribute dove deep into Michael’s catalog. Sombr kicked off the medley with hits from Michael’s landmark 1987 debut solo album, Faith, starting with the title track before moving into Father Figure.

Next, RAYE delivered a soulful rendition of I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me), beautifully blending Michael’s original vocals with her own live performance.

The mood shifted with Teddy Swims, who brought the undeniable swagger to the stage by performing Careless Whisper, complete with its signature, haunting saxophone line.

The tribute continued with an electrifying surprise from Adam Lambert, who stepped up to perform the iconic Freedom! ’90. The evening culminated in a celebratory finale as MNEK, MEEK, and Saint Harison joined Lambert for a grand send-off.

George Michael’s career was marked by massive recognition, including winning four awards and receiving the prestigious Video Vanguard Award in 1989, presented by Madonna.

This powerful tribute arrived just ahead of exciting new releases surrounding Michael’s legacy. Fans can look forward to the forthcoming concert film, George Michael: The Faith Tour, which is set to be released in cinemas in December. This film, captured across 14 cameras on 35mm film during the European leg of the ‘Faith‘ tour, is a restored and remastered look at a legendary era.

Michael’s influence continues to resonate, as his former bandmate Andrew Ridgeley noted that his music speaks to core human emotions, cementing his status as a timeless figure in music history.
