Shannon and Narducy Survey R.E.M.’s Document
Michael Shannon and Jason Narducy are back on the road, not just revisiting the legendary R.E.M. catalog, but celebrating the 40th anniversary of the iconic album Document with a full-scale tour. This ambitious project brings a collective of talented musicians, including Jon Wurster on drums, John Stirratt on bass, Dag Juhlin on guitar, and Vijay Tellis-Nayak on keyboards, to deliver the album in its entirety.
This collaborative journey is more than just a performance; it is a deep dive into a shared history. The concept for this massive undertaking grew out of Shannon and Narducy’s earlier work, stemming from their 2023 performance of Murmur at Chicago’s Metro. Over the years, this impulse evolved into a sprawling series that included performances of Murmur, Fables of the Reconstruction, Life’s Rich Pageant, and now the centerpiece, Document.
For Shannon, Document holds a deeply personal significance, marking the beginning of his own relationship with the band. He describes the album as a musical revelation, calling it a “pinnacle of songwriting and craftsmanship unseen beforehand and unmatched.”
Jason Narducy’s connection to the music runs even deeper. He recalls finding his initial spark with R.E.M. in his teens when he first discovered the album, feeling an immediate and profound connection to the lyrics and energy. This connection led him to dream of joining the band to play these songs, a dream that is now becoming a tangible reality.
The partnership between Shannon, known for his work as an actor, director, and musician, and Narducy, whose credits span bands like Bob Mould Band and Superchunk, is a substantial chapter in their careers. They have spent thirteen years playing full albums by their favorite artists in Chicago clubs before scaling up their vision into a national touring project.
The live experience promises to be unforgettable. The tour kicks off on February 3rd at Denver’s Summit Music Hall and spans through May 15th at the National in Richmond, Va. The journey also brings the music back to R.E.M.’s hometown, Athens, Ga., with two special shows at the 40 Watt Club on May 8th and 10th.
Fans can catch the dynamic duo on the road as they explore the depths of R.E.M.’s masterpiece. Tickets for the Document tour are currently on sale and available starting Friday (October 2).
The itinerary is packed with stops, including performances in major cities like Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, and Boston, ensuring that this celebration of rock history reaches audiences nationwide. This is a must-see opportunity for anyone who appreciates the enduring magic of R.E.M. and the powerful bond between its creators.
