Shakira pledges $1.25M to rebuild Colombian schools

Through her foundation, Fundación Pies Descalzos, which has been dedicated to supporting children, families, and local communities for 22 years, she is stepping up to address the catastrophic loss that has struck the area.
The impact of the disaster has been particularly brutal on education. Nearly 200 schools across the region were damaged, with a staggering 40 structures being completely destroyed. The loss is not just of buildings; it is the loss of a fundamental opportunity for a generation to learn and grow.
Responding to this crisis, Shakira immediately announced the first wave of aid. She emphasized the emotional toll of the event, stating that while words are insufficient for those who have lost loved ones, her commitment is a promise that their pain will not be forgotten.
The rebuilding effort has already seen significant momentum. An initial fund totaling $1.25 million has been mobilized. This crucial financial backing came from major entities, including Live Nation and Global Citizen, which each pledged $500,000, alongside a commitment of $250,000 from CAF, the development bank for Latin America and the Caribbean.
Shakira is personally taking the lead in a key reconstruction project: the Universidad Tecnológica de Quibdó, the region’s only university and a cornerstone institution for many local students. This institution holds special significance for Fundación Pies Descalzos, as many of their graduates pursue higher education in the area.
Looking ahead, the commitment extends beyond immediate repairs. The long-term strategy involves partnering with the Howard G. Buffett Foundation to construct ten new schools in Chocó. Shakira firmly believes that a school is far more than just buildings; it is a sanctuary where children feel safe, where they can dream, and where they have the chance to build a better future.
This recovery is not expected to be a swift process. Shakira called on the international community and the private sector to sustain their support, acknowledging that the fight for recovery will be long and arduous. She stressed that this is just the beginning, and they will continue raising donations and mobilizing new organizations to ensure that every child in Chocó, and across Colombia, can return to their classrooms and their lives.
