See Patrick Stewart in iconic video game roles
The world of entertainment mourns the passing of a monumental figure, actor Patrick Stewart, who died at the age of 86.
Known for lending his voice and presence to iconic franchises like Star Trek and X-Men, Stewart leaves behind a legacy that spans nearly seven decades of masterful acting, stage work, and an unexpected deep dive into the world of gaming.
His family shared that Patrick passed away peacefully at his home in Los Angeles on Wednesday, October 28, following a poignant journey with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia. His remarkable career was as rich and varied as the stories he brought to life across film, television, and digital worlds.
Beyond his celebrated cinematic roles, Stewart’s influence extended into the digital realm, where he carved out a niche as a voice actor for numerous video games. His presence in gaming history is a testament to his versatility, featuring in well over two dozen titles, many tied to the universes he helped define.
Among his gaming appearances are memorable roles, such as his dual portrayal of Zobek/Death in Castlevania: Lords of Shadow and his time as Emperor Uriel Septim VII in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. These roles showcased his ability to bring gravitas and depth to characters, whether through acting or voice work.
One particularly touching anecdote highlights his collaboration with game developers. When working on The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, the game’s developer, Bethesda, sent Stewart nearly a hundred pages of world lore and character motivations for his role. Rather than feeling overwhelmed, Stewart expressed sheer delight, calling it the best character preparation he had ever received in his acting career.
This love for narrative extended even to game narration. Stewart provided an iconic voice for the opening cutscene of LEGO Universe, lending a gravitas that made the story feel impactful and exciting.
His voice work in gaming has earned heartfelt tributes from his peers, including Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, William Shatner, George Takei, and Rebecca Romijn, who all paid homage to the man who was knighted in 2010 for his services to drama.
Patrick Stewart is survived by his wife Sunny, whom he married in 2013, and two children. In lieu of flowers, his family requested that memorial contributions be made to the Johns Hopkins Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center Fund and the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America Caregiver Resources, honoring his life and legacy.
