Samsung seeks to dismiss Dua Lipa’s $15 million lawsuit
In a high-stakes clash between celebrity rights and corporate intellectual property, pop sensation Dua Lipa has launched a major legal battle against electronics giant Samsung, claiming the company used her image without permission to market televisions.
The lawsuit, which demands $15 million, centers on the use of her face on the packaging of Samsung TVs sold in 2025. Lipa alleged that the manufacturer utilized her likeness for commercial gain without securing her consent or compensation.
Samsung initially defended itself by arguing that the images were provided by a content partner for the free streaming service Samsung TV Plus. The company maintained that all necessary rights had been obtained, including permission for use on sales packaging, emphasizing respect for the intellectual property of artists and stating a willingness to find a constructive solution with Lipa.
However, the legal maneuvering continued, and now, Samsung’s legal representatives have asked a judge to dismiss the entire lawsuit.
The company’s argument for dismissal rests on the assertion that the plaintiff has no grounds to sue, contending that there is nothing suggesting Lipa endorses the televisions themselves. Samsung’s lawyers pointed out that the images merely depict the televisions’ on-screen interface, illustrating the applications and content available on the display, rather than functioning as an endorsement.
The core of Lipa’s claim involves violations of several legal statutes, including copyright, the California right of publicity statute, the federal Lanham Act, and trademark claims.
The dispute highlights the complex intersection between artistic identity, commercial use, and the ownership of a celebrity’s image in the age of mass media. While Samsung sought to establish the legality of its commercial practices, Lipa’s team sought to protect her personal rights regarding her public persona.
The situation has also generated public interest, with some fan commentary reflecting the emotional connection people feel to the celebrity, noting how seeing Dua Lipa’s face on a product can influence purchasing decisions.
