Saint Agnes’s battle against tragedy and industry

The journey of Saint Agnes is a masterclass in artistic defiance, proving that sometimes the hardest records are the ones you refuse to stop making. Formed in 2014, this London trio carries a name steeped in history, but their true legacy lies in their relentless pursuit of creative freedom, navigating the intense pressures of fame and emotional turmoil to forge something truly their own.

Before reaching the heights of critical acclaim, the path to recording their work was anything but smooth. Their previous effort, Bloodsuckers, was fraught with difficulty. As singer Kitty A. Austen recalls, the experience was deeply traumatizing and exhausting, especially since her mother had passed away unexpectedly right before they started the sessions.

This history of struggle fueled a powerful decision in 2025. Emotionally drained but undeterred, the trio walked into the studio ready to shed self-imposed rules and embrace a radical new direction. They decided they had nothing left to lose, determined to create music that reflected their raw, evolving reality.

Where they had previously explored anthemic, guitar-based punk rock in the vein of Wargasm and Dead Pony, they pivoted to an entirely different sonic landscape. Their latest offering, Your God Fearing Days Are About To Begin, fuses eerie synth melodies with sludgy guitars, biting political commentary, and utterly infectious choruses, creating a seething, industrial-pop triumph.

“We had no idea what we were doing – we just started experimenting,” Kitty Austen explains. “It was really fun to try something completely different. This record feels like who Saint Agnes truly are.”

The new album is a tapestry woven with deep personal reflection. Lyrically, Your God Fearing Days Are About To Begin acts as a mirror to Kitty’s internal struggles with grief and anxiety, while simultaneously holding up a critical lens to the increasingly bleak state of the outside world. While neither member claims religious devotion, the record draws heavily on biblical themes and iconography.

Jon James Tufnell, the band’s guitarist, notes that the overarching pattern on the record is the exploration of power—the various forms of it and the band’s responses to them. Every track tells a story about confronting power, whether it’s sinister, hidden behind credibility, or embodied by corporate figures, narcissistic partners, or religious constructs.

This exploration is evident in tracks like Gods Of War, which addresses how the far-right utilizes Christianity as a cover for nefarious means. They also tackle anti-capitalist themes with anthems like Good Boy, reflecting a desire to choose an alternative lifestyle away from the relentless 9-to-5 grind.

Despite the grueling process of creating this new material, the band found the necessary motivation in their defiance. They pushed through the challenges, realizing that having their own voice and creative control was the ultimate victory. This determination culminated in a record that is both critically acclaimed and a declaration of self-assured swagger.

With Your God Fearing Days Are About To Begin earning widespread recognition and an upcoming US tour, Saint Agnes stands at the height of their creative power, fully in command of their destiny.
