Sacha Baron Cohen stars in Tarantino’s swashbuckling West End play
Get ready to sharpen your rapier and prepare for some serious theatrical chaos. Sacha Baron Cohen has officially confirmed his starring role in Quentin Tarantino’s debut play, The Popinjay Cavalier.
Described as a swashbuckling comedy, the production promises a grand adventure steeped in deception, disguise, and daring exploits. Set in the dramatic landscape of 1830s Europe, the play is a vibrant celebration of the grand adventure epics and sparkling romances that inspired Hollywood’s golden age.
The story follows Rupert Sebastian Thomas Jr. (portrayed by Cohen), the world’s greatest actor, as he embarks on a perilous journey. After a few ill-advised words about the French land put him in hot water, Rupert’s triumphant trip across the Channel takes a decidedly more dangerous turn, promising thrilling action and high stakes.
Fans can anticipate Tarantino’s signature style woven into a sweeping celebration of theatre. The production promises acrobatics, swordplay, dastardly acts, and an incredible cast whose virtues manage to put the very saints to shame.
This ambitious project is slated to premiere at London’s Phoenix Theatre in February 2027. It will run from February 23, 2027, until June 13, 2027.
The collaboration brings together two titans of creative storytelling. Cohen, known for his fearless and distinctive persona, is lending his talents to a work penned and directed by the legendary Quentin Tarantino. Cohen himself shared a lighthearted take on the high-profile pairing, noting that he agreed to the role when Tarantino called, adding a wink about losing “West End virginity” together.
Tarantino, who has recently explored creative outlets outside of film, including published novels and screenplays for sequels, brings his unique vision to the stage. His decision to pursue theatre suggests a deep appreciation for the theatrical lineage that fuels the cinematic world he has shaped.
The energy surrounding The Popinjay Cavalier is building fast. Tickets are scheduled to go on sale later today and will be available for purchase through the Phoenix Theatre.
