Sabrina Carpenter and Tom Holland in Astaire biopic
The stage is set for a dazzling cinematic event, as a new biopic is gearing up to bring the timeless legacy of dance to the big screen. The project is set to star a powerhouse ensemble, featuring Sabrina Carpenter as the iconic Ginger Rogers and Tom Holland as the legendary Fred Astaire.
Adding depth and historical context to the narrative is Margaret Qualley, who has joined the cast as Fred Astaire’s older sister and original dance partner, Adele.
Behind the scenes, the creative vision is helmed by Paul King, the director best known for the whimsical brilliance of Paddington and Wonka. King expressed immense enthusiasm for the project, stating that he is honored to tell the story of Fred Astaire and Adele, noting the profound, yet largely undocumented, history of their partnership.
“Fred left a timeless legacy of dance on film – most famously in his collaborations with Ginger Rogers – while Adele’s work has been lost to history; indeed, no footage of her dancing survives,” King shared. He acknowledged the cinematic challenge of capturing these twentieth-century icons, emphasizing that the magic lies in bringing these figures to life with the talent of Tom Holland, Margaret Qualley, and Sabrina Carpenter by his side.
The film will delve into the hugely successful partnership between Fred and Adele Astaire, focusing on their celebrated performances on Broadway and in London’s West End during the 1910s and 1920s. This era marked a golden age for the pair, who became one of cinema’s most celebrated dance partnerships, notably through collaborations with Rogers in films like The Gay Divorcee, Top Hat, Swing Time, and Shall We Dance.
The story is grounded in reality, drawing inspiration from Kathleen Riley’s biography The Astaires: Fred & Adele, with Riley also contributing as a script consultant.
The cast brings a blend of established talent and emerging stardom to the project. Sabrina Carpenter, known for her significant acting roles and her ascent as a global pop star, steps into the role of Ginger Rogers. Meanwhile, Tom Holland has revealed his personal desire to fully embody the role of Fred Astaire, aiming to experience the choreography firsthand.
Holland confessed his excitement, admitting that the process filled him with both anticipation and a touch of apprehension as he prepared for the demanding role. He expressed a specific goal: “I have a desire to use no doubles – to do all of the dancing, to shoot those dances in one shot, how he would have done it.”
This ambitious project promises more than just a historical look at dance; it offers a vibrant, modern interpretation of a legendary partnership, weaving together cinematic history with the contemporary energy of its talented stars.
