The sound of post-metal has traveled far, but the energy behind it remains tightly woven. More than two decades ago, the instrumental trio Russian Circles forged their signature, vast and searching sound back in Chicago, setting a benchmark for atmospheric heavy music that continues to resonate today.
While the core creative unit remains united by their musical vision, the members now inhabit different corners of the country, each pursuing various creative ventures while still keeping the threads of Russian Circles intact.
Bassist and keyboardist Brian Cook is currently exploring new landscapes, having recently joined forces with Aaron Turner in SUMAC. This current collaboration keeps him connected to the wider experimental scene, even as he finds his home on Vashon Island outside Seattle. Meanwhile, guitarist Mike Sullivan resides in Los Angeles, adding another layer of distance, though their musical synergy remains effortless across state lines. Drummer Dave Turncrantz stays rooted back in Chicago, providing a steady anchor for the group’s history.
Despite the physical separation, the band continues to gather, not just to make music and tour, but to maintain that unique collaborative spirit that defines them. And now, they are ready to share their latest work with the world: the announcement of their new album, Nine. The anticipation is building for this latest chapter in Russian Circles‘ ongoing sonic journey.
