Roses in Churches

Chvrches, the Glasgow indie pop veterans, have certainly found a way back to the spotlight, proving that even after a period of silence, the creative engine keeps running. While the band remains a familiar force, the recent period has seen significant creative expansion, with members exploring diverse musical avenues outside of their established sound.

The momentum has been particularly noticeable through the solo endeavors of band members. Lauren Mayberry took the opportunity to venture out on her own, releasing her debut solo album, Vicious Creature, in 2024, demonstrating a clear artistic appetite for solo work. Simultaneously, Martin Doherty launched his own creative project, the Leaving, adding fresh, individual perspectives to the broader Chvrches universe.

Despite these solo explorations, the core group continues to deliver, keeping the band’s connection with their audience strong. Chvrches has kicked out fresh material, including tracks like here and there, offering listeners new sounds alongside their established repertoire.

The band also embraced a spirit of musical homage, incorporating covers into their recent output. This move saw them tackling classic tracks, including covers of Postal Service and Robert Palmer>, showcasing their versatility and appreciation for the history of pop music.

Adding another layer to their current activities, Chvrches is currently tuning up for the soundtrack of the Hulu drama Tell Me Lies, demonstrating their commitment to bridging the gap between music and visual storytelling.

This period of activity shows that while the band has been in what some might call an between-albums mode for some time, it has not faded. Instead, it has evolved, allowing the members to pursue personal projects while still delivering engaging new content. The ongoing creative output ensures that the Chvrches sound remains dynamic and relevant for fans who have followed their journey.
