From the quiet fields of rural Georgia, a songwriter’s journey from obscurity to cult-classic reverence is finally hitting a major milestone. Robert Lester Folsom’s legacy is expanding with the release of Music and Dreams: 50th Anniversary Edition, available via Anthology Recordings on October 16.
This special double album isn’t just a retrospective; it’s an excavation. It expands Folsom’s celebrated 1976 folk rock relic by diving deep into the source material, featuring original reel-to-reel demos alongside fascinating contemporary covers by artists like Beach House and Hannah Cohen.
One of the most captivating elements of the new edition is the juxtaposition of sounds. Beach House’s haunting rendition of “April Suzanne,” for instance, offers a stark contrast to the remastered version of Folsom’s original, presenting two completely different windows into the song’s emotional landscape.
The archival material is rich with detail, sourced by Folsom’s longtime collaborator Don Fleming and masterfully produced by Grammy-nominated engineer Jessica Thompson. These demos offer an intimate look at the songwriting that ultimately led to the pivotal studio album, Music and Dreams. Before this reissue, the album had already been transformed into a legend, but the inclusion of these raw, early recordings solidifies his status as a foundational figure.
Folsom’s path to recognition was slow, moving from a life spent as a house painter to finding new audiences through collections like If You Wanna Laugh, You Gotta Cry Sometimes. These rougher, more intimate recordings illuminated the depth of his craft, laying the groundwork for the enduring appeal of his work.
The rediscovery has since moved far beyond crate-digging. In 2024, Folsom proved his enduring relevance by performing material from Music and Dreams at a sold-out show in Chicago, sparking renewed excitement for his work.
The momentum continues as Folsom embarks on his first extensive U.S. tour. Fans can catch the music live, with upcoming dates including a stop at New York’s Bowery Ballroom on October 11, followed by a conclusion in Richmond, Va., on October 18.
