Ridley Scott weighs in on Paul Mescal firing drama
The Hollywood machine is full of whispers, and sometimes those whispers turn into headlines. Recently, a story surfaced regarding the professional relationship between director Ridley Scott and actor Paul Mescal, sparking speculation about casting choices and creative tensions within the film industry.
The buzz centered on reports suggesting that Mescal was allegedly dismissed from Ridley Scott’s project, The Dog Stars, due to perceived lack of masculinity in Gladiator II. This alleged decision drew attention, especially given the high expectations surrounding the epic sequel, which starred Russell Crowe.
Gladiator II, the 2024 sequel, was a commercial success, grossing $462 million, but it did not land critically well, receiving an 80 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film itself, though exciting in its swordfighting and dramatic scope, struggled to connect with audiences and critics alike, particularly following Russell Crowe’s comments that the movie lacked a moral core.
The reported shift in casting—replacing Mescal with Jacob Elordi on The Dog Stars—was seen by some observers as a reflection of this creative friction. This change took place shortly after some reports suggested Mescal faced scheduling conflicts, which reportedly prevented him from committing to Scott’s new film.
However, the official side offered a different perspective. A representative for Scott publicly denied the claims of a firing, explaining that Mescal’s absence from The Dog Stars was due to filming schedules for other projects. They noted that Scott remained enthusiastic about working with Mescal and that he was thrilled to cast Jacob Elordi in the role.
The reasons for Mescal’s busy calendar were rooted in his other commitments. At the time, reports indicated that Mescal was heavily involved in Sam Mendes’ forthcoming four-part biopic of The Beatles, where he was slated to portray Paul McCartney. This demanding schedule placed a strain on his availability for other major productions.
Beyond the casting drama, Mescal has also made public statements on social issues, including recently sharing his support for transgender rights during the London Trans+ Pride demonstration. This latest context adds another layer to the public profile of an actor navigating a complex and often high-pressure career.
