Richard Thompson shares new album and reveals “Cocaine Walking” details

Richard Thompson, the master of English folk-rock guitar work, is ready to share a new collection of musical kinship with his upcoming album, Hippies, Thugs and Heroes. Set for release on October 16 via New West, this record delves into the deeply personal world of songwriting, revealing how seemingly disparate melodies can connect into a shared narrative.

Thompson reflects on the creative process, describing the act of writing as a search for musical connection. “You look over the body of songs you’ve written and ask yourself, which ones are kindred spirits,” he notes. He adds that finding commonality among these pieces is a source of joy when he realizes that certain songs seem to be brothers and sisters.

The album’s introduction arrives with the single Cocaine Walking, Booze Talking, a track that immediately showcases Thompson’s signature guitar virtuosity blended with vivid wordplay. It serves as an engaging gateway into the rich tapestry of ideas contained within the full LP.

Hippies, Thugs and Heroes: The album features twelve tracks, including titles such as Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Pauper’s Grave, Unsung Hero, and the compelling The Big Smoke.

Beyond the studio work, Thompson is gearing up for an extensive tour, bringing this new material to audiences across the globe. Fans can catch live performances during his UK dates in August and September 2026, with appearances scheduled at venues ranging from Cambridge Folk Festival 2026 to the Bromyard Folk Festival 2026.

The itinerary also includes a stop in the United States later that year. Thompson is scheduled to perform in Montclair, New Jersey, and will also take the stage at the Outpost in the Burbs’ Concert for Toni’s Kitchen in Montclair, NJ on November 21st, where he will be joined by Zara Phillips.

Further US dates are planned for November with a performance at the Elkton Music Hall in Elkton, MD, and another engagement in Montclair, NJ.
