Rex Orange County, Tyler, The Creator & Turnstile live London
London was buzzing with musical energy recently, highlighted by an intimate performance that blended some of the most exciting sounds in contemporary music. The British singer-songwriter, Rex Orange County, joined forces with Brendan Yates of Turnstile for a set that delivered a dose of raw, unreleased energy.
At a gig at Village Underground, the duo unveiled their new track, ‘Elvis’. The song began with a simple guitar riff before gradually escalating into a cinematic soundscape, incorporating rich string arrangements and touches of flute. The lyrics provided a playful, self-aware reflection: “I’m not too calm I shake my legs like I’m Elvis/I wanna be your only friend cause I’m selfish/I wanna stay here forever like its Vegas/Theres no-one else I wanna share this hotel with,” Rex Orange County sang, handing the mic over to Yates for the final verse.
This performance served as a perfect warm-up for the larger festival scene. Just days later, the spotlight turned to the massive All Points East takeover in London. This event was an absolute explosion of talent, featuring Tyler, The Creator alongside a stellar lineup including Turnstile, Mariah The Scientist, Clipse, Sexyy Red, Ravyn Lenae, Vince Staples, Fakemink, and Jim Legxacy.
The connection between the artists deepened during the festival. Rex Orange County later appeared on stage during Tyler’s headline performance, joining him to perform ‘Boredom’, a track they co-created from Tyler’s 2017 album ‘Flower Boy’. The collaboration highlighted a shared sensibility and undeniable chemistry on the stage.
The excitement extended beyond the London scene, showcasing the broader musical landscape. At a subsequent festival, Tyler, The Creator brought out surprise guests A$AP ROCKY and Rex Orange County, adding another layer of star power to the event. Furthermore, Turnstile’s Faye Webster made a memorable appearance, performing ‘I Care’ during their set. This appearance coincided with the release of the band’s reimagined album ‘Never Enough: Versions’, featuring Webster’s reworked version of ‘I Care’.
The musical connections continued with Rex Orange County releasing the introspective single ‘Indecision’, a collaboration with Daniel Caesar.
