(What's the Story) Morning Glory? Review: Britpop's Biggest Anthems

Oasis - (What's the Story) Morning Glory? (1995)

8.5/10 — Oasis - (What's the Story) Morning Glory? (1995)

Pros

  • Huge, singalong choruses
  • 'Wonderwall' and 'Don't Look Back in Anger'
  • Great energy

Cons

  • Compressed production
  • Derivative at times

(What’s the Story) Morning Glory? was Oasis’s second album and a chart-topping success, helped by the rivalry with Blur. It was one of the best-selling British albums of its decade.

What works

‘Wonderwall’, ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’ and ‘Champagne Supernova’ are huge, and ‘Some Might Say’ and ‘Roll with It’ are brash. Noel Gallagher’s songs and Liam’s sneering vocals combine for an anthemic sound.

Where it falters

The production is loud and compressed, and some tracks are derivative of 1960s sources.

Verdict

A loud, tuneful and big-hearted album.
