Trout Mask Replica Review: Wilfully Wild and Utterly Unique

Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band - Trout Mask Replica (1969)

8/10 — Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band - Trout Mask Replica (1969)

Pros

  • Singular, inventive sound
  • Huge influence
  • Astonishing precision

Cons

  • Very difficult listen
  • Reports of a gruelling process

Produced by Frank Zappa, Trout Mask Replica sounds like chaos but was painstakingly rehearsed. The Magic Band played interlocking, offbeat parts taught by Beefheart.

What works

The playing is startling, with angular guitars and a growling voice, and tracks like ‘Dachau Blues’ and ‘Moonlight on Vermont’ are unlike anything else. Its influence on post-punk and art rock is huge.

Where it falters

It’s deliberately difficult and can sound formless, and its recording process was reportedly gruelling for the band.

Verdict

A fascinating, polarising record that is easier to admire than to love.
