Tapestry Review: The Soundtrack to a Generation

Carole King - Tapestry (1971)

9.5/10 — Carole King - Tapestry (1971)

Pros

  • Timeless songs
  • Intimate piano and vocals
  • Warm production

Cons

  • Occasionally safe

After years as a Brill Building songwriter for others, Carole King released Tapestry, where she sang her own songs. It spent years on the US chart and won four Grammys.

What works

‘You’ve Got a Friend’, ‘It’s Too Late’ and ‘(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman’ are classics, and King’s piano and plain-spoken vocals are intimate. The songs feel lived-in and universal.

Where it falters

The production is mellow, and the album occasionally plays it safe.

Verdict

A cosy, brilliant singer-songwriter landmark.
