Straight Outta Compton Review: Gangsta Rap's Explosive Arrival
9/10 — N.W.A - Straight Outta Compton (1988)
Pros
- Powerful, confrontational energy
- Dr. Dre's production
- Historic impact
Cons
- Misogynistic lyrics
- Violent content
Straight Outta Compton introduced Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Eazy-E, MC Ren and DJ Yella to the world. Its raw depictions of life in Compton and criticism of the police sparked controversy, including an FBI warning letter.
What works
‘Straight Outta Compton’ and ‘F*** tha Police’ are furious, ‘Express Yourself’ is a funky highlight, and Dr. Dre and Yella’s production is punchy. The group’s energy and anger are compelling.
Where it falters
The lyrics are misogynistic and violent, and several tracks are crude.
Verdict
A seminal, confrontational record with a troubling side.
