Rumours Review: Heartbreak as Pop Perfection

Fleetwood Mac - Rumours (1977)

9.5/10 — Fleetwood Mac - Rumours (1977)

Pros

  • Gorgeous harmonies
  • Great hit singles
  • Emotional honesty

Cons

  • Glossy
  • Occasionally soft

Rumours was recorded as the band’s relationships collapsed, with two couples breaking up in the middle of the sessions. Their private turmoil became the subject matter.

What works

‘Go Your Own Way’, ‘Dreams’ and ‘The Chain’ are perfectly crafted, and the harmonies of Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie are heavenly. The production is clean and warm, and the whole album flows beautifully.

Where it falters

It’s glossy and a little safe in places, and some songs lean on soft-rock sentiment.

Verdict

A flawless piece of California pop-rock.
