Nevermind Review: The Album That Changed Rock Overnight

Nirvana - Nevermind (1991)

9.5/10 — Nirvana - Nevermind (1991)

Pros

  • Huge, unforgettable hooks
  • Grohl's powerhouse drumming
  • Cobain's raw emotion

Cons

  • Polished compared with their punk roots
  • Slightly weaker second half

Nevermind was Nirvana’s major-label debut, produced by Butch Vig, and it knocked Michael Jackson off the top of the US charts in 1992. It brought alternative rock into the mainstream almost overnight.

What works

‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ is the famous one, but ‘Come as You Are’, ‘Lithium’ and ‘In Bloom’ are just as strong. Kurt Cobain mixes snarling anger with sweetness, Dave Grohl’s drumming is thunderous, and the quiet-loud dynamics are brilliantly used.

Where it falters

The sound is polished compared to the band’s earlier work, which some punk fans resented, and the second half has a few filler-ish moments.

Verdict

An unforgettable, era-defining record that still bristles with energy.
