Music from Big Pink Review: The Basement Sessions That Birthed Americana

9/10 — The Band - Music from Big Pink (1968)
Pros
- 'The Weight' and 'I Shall Be Released'
- Warm vocal harmonies
- Organic sound
Cons
- Uneven
- A few weaker songs
Music from Big Pink was recorded after the Band’s work with Bob Dylan in Woodstock, and contains three Dylan songs. It turned its back on psychedelia for an earthy, rural sound.
What works
‘The Weight’ is a timeless story-song, ‘This Wheel’s on Fire’ is haunting, and ‘I Shall Be Released’ is a heartbreaking closer. The three-part vocal harmonies and the musicianship are warm and unforced.
Where it falters
The album can feel loose and uneven, and some songs are less compelling.
Verdict
A modest, profound debut.
