Graceland Review: A Joyful South African Collaboration

Paul Simon - Graceland (1986)

9/10 — Paul Simon - Graceland (1986)

Pros

  • Joyful South African rhythms
  • 'You Can Call Me Al'
  • Ladysmith Black Mambazo

Cons

  • Boycott controversy

Paul Simon travelled to South Africa to record with local musicians, including Ladysmith Black Mambazo, in defiance of a cultural boycott. The album was a major hit and also a controversy.

What works

The sound is bright and rhythmic, with the lilting guitar of ‘You Can Call Me Al’ and the harmonies of Ladysmith Black Mambazo on ‘Homeless’. Simon’s lyrics are witty and wistful, and the musicianship is wonderful.

Where it falters

The boycott controversy complicated its reception, and some critics argued that it took more than it gave.

Verdict

A vibrant, warm album with an awkward context.
