Electric Ladyland Review: Hendrix's Sprawling Studio Adventure

The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Electric Ladyland (1968)

9/10 — The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Electric Ladyland (1968)

Pros

  • 'All Along the Watchtower'
  • 'Voodoo Child (Slight Return)'
  • Hendrix's ambition

Cons

  • Overlong
  • Some drifting jams

Electric Ladyland was recorded across several studios, with Hendrix taking over production and bringing in guests like Steve Winwood and Al Kooper. It’s a double album that closes with his definitive ‘Voodoo Child (Slight Return)’.

What works

‘All Along the Watchtower’ is a stunning reimagining of a Dylan song, ‘Voodoo Child (Slight Return)’ is a monster, and the long jams and studio effects show Hendrix’s imagination. His playing is mind-blowing throughout.

Where it falters

The double album is overlong and some of the jams drift, and relationships in the band were strained.

Verdict

A sprawling showcase for a guitar genius.
