RAYE, Sombr, Teddy Swims & Adam Lambert Tribute George Michael at 2026 VMAs

The 2026 MTV VMAs stage was set for celebration, and the tribute to the late pop icon George Michael truly stole the show on Sunday night, gracing the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. More than just a remembrance, the evening became a vibrant celebration of a musical legacy that defined pop history, weaving together a star-studded medley that honored Michael’s enduring influence.

Nearly a decade after his passing, the tribute was a spectacular convergence of talent, featuring a dynamic mix of contemporary artists and legends. The performance honored not only George Michael but also the 30-year milestone of his iconic Older album, which spawned classics like “Jesus to a Child” and “Fastlove.”

The evening kicked off with Grammy-nominated alt-pop breakout sombr, who brought a distinctive rock edge to the tribute. He set the tone with a powerful medley of “Faith” and “Father Figure,” delivering a performance that highlighted the contrast between Michael’s signature hits and a darker, sultrier musical landscape.

The spotlight then shifted to RAYE, who dazzled the packed theater by tackling a medley that included “I Will Overcome” and “Where Is My Husband!” Before transitioning to the iconic “Carless Whisper” saxophone riff, RAYE delivered a powerful rendition of “I Knew You Were Waiting for Me,” injecting a sophisticated jazz sensibility into the performance.

Teddy Swims followed, his soaring vocals anchoring the segment with his performance of “Whisper.” This track resonated deeply, tapping into the emotional core of the tribute while celebrating the massive success of his hit “Lose Control.”

The energy continued as the stage was filled by a diverse group of performers, including Adam Lambert, who led a powerful closing number with “Freedom ’90.” This closing segment brought back other celebrated names like MNEK, Saint Harison, and MEEK, creating an unforgettable moment of collective musical homage.

George Michael’s career was defined by undeniable success and unparalleled influence. Throughout his journey, he secured four VMAs, including the prestigious Video Vanguard award in 1989. His output was prolific, including a Grammy nomination for the music video of “Flawless (Go to the City),” and he amassed eight Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hits, alongside a landmark 12-week Billboard 200 No. 1 album in 1987’s Faith.

The tribute proved that George Michael’s music remains a timeless force, connecting generations through unforgettable melodies and a legacy that continues to inspire.
