Rancid looks back at Wolves at 30
Thirty years after the explosive arrival of …And Out Come the Wolves, the punk icon Rancid is preparing to deliver a tribute that goes far beyond nostalgia. The band is releasing an expansive new boxed set that digs deep into the heart of their 1995 landmark, offering fans an unparalleled look at the legacy, the chaos, and the raw talent that defined a generation of punk rock.
This anniversary collection packages the original album with a trove of rarely seen material, including the previously unreleased Alive recording and a special Live in NYC performance capture. Beyond the core tracks, the set includes three long-out-of-print 7-inches and a stack of exclusive memorabilia, ensuring that the history of the band is preserved in stunning detail.
The original album, released in August 1995 by Epitaph, was a defining document of the ’90s punk revival. Fueled by radio-friendly hits like “Time Bomb,” “Ruby Soho,” and “Roots Radical,” the record achieved significant traction, peaking at No. 45 on the Billboard 200. Rancid’s success was rooted in their commitment to the punk ethos of growing louder without compromising their foundational values.
Critics have long celebrated the songwriting partnership of Tim Armstrong and Lars Frederiksen, recognizing the group’s peak as a “masterclass explosion of weaving pop hooks, street punk attitude, tales of heroes and villains, gang singalongs and some of the best basslines on offer in punk.” Despite attracting major label interest during this era, the band wisely remained true to their roots on Indie Epitaph, maintaining creative control over their sound.
This new retrospective collection pulls together material from the band’s vault and contributions from dedicated archivists and fans, revealing moments from 1995 to 2016. It features rediscovered demos, selections from a rare 1995 BBC session, and live performances captured from various global stops, including San Francisco, Tokyo, Manchester, and Montreal.
The centerpiece of the release is the unreleased Live in NYC recording, which vividly captures performances of anthems like “Roots Radical” and “Ruby Soho.” This special recording, alongside the rare pressings of the iconic 7-inches, provides fans with an intimate, unfiltered look at the band’s journey. The package also includes physical items like a 45 adapter, a band-signed 12-inch lithograph of the album artwork, a sticker sheet, a patch, and an enamel logo pin, cementing this collection as a true collector’s piece.
As Rancid continues to evolve, with their most recent studio album being Tomorrow Never Comes in 2023, this anniversary collection serves as a powerful testament to the enduring legacy of the ’95 sound. It is a celebration of the raw energy that launched a career and a deep dive into the history of a band that never stopped pushing the boundaries of punk rock.
