PURGATORY’s 4-Day Halloween Marathon at Refuge NYC

When the holiday weekend hits, most clubs offer a single night of celebration. But in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Refuge NYC decides to turn Halloween into a full-blown four-day marathon, plunging the city into the depths of sound with the PURGATORY event. From Thursday, October 29 through Sunday, November 1, the club keeps its doors wide open for a relentless run of six parties, ensuring the music never stops.

This extended celebration isn’t just about cramming more parties in; it’s about an immersive experience designed to cater to every mood and every genre. The lineup is a sonic odyssey, blending house, techno, UK garage, and whatever the selectors feel like bringing, creating a dizzying, non-stop flow through the weekend.

Refuge has always stood apart, refusing to be treated like any other venue. With a capacity of 500, the space offers a radical communal experience: no tables to buy, no roped-off areas, and everyone shares the same floor. This is a space built around the music, defined by a massive REX analogue system that the club and its designers built themselves, ensuring that the sound isn’t just heard—it’s felt.

The marathon sessions are masterfully distributed across the main room and the courtyard, stretching from the early morning through the sunrise, ensuring there is a slot for every kind of raver to dive into the experience.

The journey begins on Thursday with a potent pairing that immediately sets a high bar: the forward-thinking UK garage and house sounds of salute and Detroit techno legend Stacey Pullen sharing the stage. This opening night is a perfect introduction to the wildly diverse sonic landscape to come.

Friday dials up the heat with joyful house and disco from Jayda G and Suze Ijó. But the night is punctuated by a poignant moment for longtime fans as Soul Clap and DJ E-Cology share a final set at Refuge. Following twenty-five years of partnership, the duo bid a heartfelt farewell, marking a powerful moment of music history.

The marathon continues through the weekend with incredible talent. Saturday features Victor Calderone leading the daytime session alongside Anthony Middleton of Audiofly, followed by the intense techno of Nicole Moudaber for the Halloween night, and a late-night session by Mira, known for her atmospheric, textured soundscapes. The weekend culminates with a stunning sunrise set from Mira, followed by a closing session from Serge Devant and Vanjee, leaving attendees energized and satisfied.

Refuge was conceived by founders John DiMatteo and Craig “Shorty” Bernabeu, who aimed to create a space where music and community reign supreme. By stretching this philosophy across a holiday weekend, PURGATORY proves that when you build a space around exceptional sound and give artists the time to play extended sets, the crowd doesn’t just come for a party—they stay for the entire marathon.
