Police dig up massive drug stash ahead of festival
Just days before the music kicks off, a massive operation by local police unearthed a significant cache of illegal substances buried beneath the grounds of the Creamfields festival site.
This discovery underscores the ongoing challenge faced by security forces in managing large-scale events and the persistent attempts by some attendees to circumvent the rules.
As anticipation builds for the upcoming festival, which is set to welcome over 80,000 fans for the 2026 edition, the police action revealed a concerning pattern of behavior.
During a routine pre-event search of the festival grounds, authorities uncovered a substantial stash, including 204 canisters of laughing gas (nitrous oxide) and bags containing various illicit drugs such as ketamine, MDMA, and ecstasy.
Superintendent Andy Blizard, who oversaw the operation, noted that this practice has become alarmingly regular. He pointed out that punters frequently attempt to hide or bury illegal items at the site months in advance, seeking to evade detection.
Despite these attempts to conceal contraband, the police maintain a firm zero-tolerance policy regarding illegal substances.
The officer confirmed that while the search is complete, further scrutiny of the site is planned in the coming days. He added that those who chose to hide these items will likely be disappointed to find them no longer where they left them.
Police will remain onsite alongside security staff, and they have urged anyone who has buried items to get in contact with them if they wish to retrieve their belongings.
This isn’t an isolated incident. Law enforcement agencies have repeatedly confirmed finding illegal drugs stashed ahead of major music events. For instance, back in 2024, similar incidents were reported at Manchester’s Heaton Park ahead of a reunion show, where some fans had reportedly hidden drugs.
The history of such attempts to conceal substances has been noted across the music scene, with some artists themselves reflecting on the context. Liam Gallagher, for example, commented jovially on the issue, recalling that such actions are not new to the festival culture.
