Play P of the Week: It Feels Like a Mix of Two Favorites
Jay Worthy continues to prove that creativity knows no bounds, relentlessly pursuing projects that honor musical history while injecting them with a vibrant, modern energy. From groundbreaking music collaborations to meticulously crafted digital experiences, Worthy is building a world where vintage aesthetics meet contemporary sounds.
At the heart of his current pursuits is the album Generation P, a massive collaboration that taps into legendary roots. Worthy teamed up with the iconic George Clinton and producer Sean House, forming the duo LNDN DRGS. This project builds upon the success of his earlier Once Upon a Time series, offering fans a deep dive into a rich musical tapestry.
The sound of Generation P is packed with talent, featuring an impressive roster of artists including Snoop Dogg, Larry June, Ty Dolla $ign, Terrace Martin, Curren$y, Del the Funky Homosapien, and many others, setting the stage for a truly eclectic sonic journey.
Beyond the music, Worthy has also explored multimedia with singles like Knee Deep and Atomic P. But perhaps the most unique venture to date is the creation of P of the Week, a little 16-bit video game that serves as a delightful homage to retro gaming culture.
Working with designer Kyle Zimmer, the game is a mashup of classic franchises like Super Mario and Streets of Rage. Zimmer made a conscious choice to capture the authentic feel of playing games on old-school CRT monitors, aiming to preserve that analogue aesthetic rather than simply imitating a modern retro look.
“I wanted the game to feel like something you grew up playing on a CRT, not a modern retro imitation,” Zimmer explained. His process focused on preserving that nostalgic feel while ensuring smooth performance on modern mobile browsers.
This commitment to authenticity extends beyond pixels and sound. George Clinton’s grandson, marketing manager and A&R for the project, Zavier Croft, sees the game as more than just entertainment. He views it as a tribute to a lost period, emphasizing the connection between cultural history, physical media, and vintage artifacts.
Generation P is set to arrive on August 28th, providing a vibrant soundtrack for this ambitious creative vision. Meanwhile, players are invited to experience this unique retro world by playing P of the Week.
