Placebo’s brooding new single Helen Keller

As the music world celebrates the enduring legacy of a classic, brooding act, Placebo has kicked off their 30th-anniversary celebrations with a new, intensely atmospheric single: Helen Keller.

This latest release immediately plunges listeners into a powerful, new sound. The track masterfully draws upon the eerie keyboard melody from their debut instrumental, ‘H.K. Farewell,’ using it as a foundation for an entirely new song. It channels that spectral atmosphere but pushes the emotional intensity into a heavier, more anguished rock setting.

The inspiration for the track is equally evocative. Named after the American author, disability rights advocate, and political activist who became deafblind as a young child, the song connects the band’s sound with a deeply human narrative, exploring themes of struggle and resilience.

The production for ‘Helen Keller’ was handled by Placebo themselves, alongside Adam Noble, who also managed the mixing, ensuring the track retained the essence of the original while delivering a fresh, potent edge.

The new single serves as a vibrant starting point for the band’s anniversary project. Earlier this year, Placebo released Placebo RE, a project where the band revisited and reworked all ten tracks from their 1996 debut, plus ‘Drowning By Numbers‘ and ‘H.K. Farewell.’ Described by the group as a director’s cut, this effort successfully brought three decades of performance back into the recordings while honouring the spirit of their originals.

The anniversary momentum continues with a massive tour schedule. The celebration officially begins tonight at the Super Bock Arena in Porto, where the band will focus exclusively on material from their debut and the 1998 track ‘Without You I’m Nothing.’

After an extensive European run, the band will then sweep across the UK and Ireland in late November and early December, hitting major cities like Manchester, Glasgow, London, Dublin, and Cardiff. This tour revives songs that have not been performed live in over two decades, offering fans a unique journey through the band’s history.

While the new single anchors the anniversary celebrations, Placebo’s recent work, particularly their 2022 album Never Let Me Go, continues to solidify their place as a force in music. Critics have lauded the record as a renaissance rock record with an experimental edge, confirming the band’s ongoing ability to evolve and inspire.
