Phoebe Bridgers reunites with Boygenius for an acoustic performance

The magic of musical reunion often happens in the most unexpected places, and the recent collaboration between Phoebe Bridgers and her bandmates from Boygenius was a perfect example of that synchronicity. Amidst the reflective landscape of her solo work, Bridgers stepped back to embrace the harmony of her core group for a short, ethereal acoustic performance, masterfully directed by Lance Oppenheim.

This intimate set took place as part of A24’s Sound Check At Cherry Lane Theatre series, an initiative that fosters unique, personal performances alongside renowned directors. It provided a wonderfully stripped-back moment that perfectly captured the depth and vulnerability inherent in their shared artistry.

For Bridgers, this moment arrived while she is navigating the journey of her solo record, ‘Lost Weekend’, and following her recent feature film debut in Primetime. It was a necessary pause, a chance to connect with the foundational sounds that have shaped her storytelling.

The performance itself was a tapestry of shared melodies. Bridgers opened the session by performing ‘On Video,’ a track drawn from the soundtrack of her film, joined by longtime collaborator Ethan Gruska providing delicate piano accompaniment. Then, the full force of the Boygenius collective joined in, performing ‘Haunted’ and ‘Lost Boys.’ The resulting vocal harmonies added a remarkable new layer of emotional texture to Bridgers’ work.

This reunion speaks to a history already forged between the artists. Bridgers and her bandmates, Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus, have explored these musical landscapes together on Bridgers’ solo tour, sharing powerful tracks like ‘Not Strong Enough’ and ‘Powers’ during their previous performances.

Their connection extends back further, including a notable television appearance together on Saturday Night Live in 2023. This shared history informs the new collaborations, lending an immediate, undeniable authenticity to the acoustic session.

Bridgers is currently embarking on her ‘Lost Tour’ across North America, celebrating her latest work. Although recent physical challenges led to some scheduled stops being cancelled, the songwriter has wisely rescheduled her intimate UK shows, ensuring that this powerful creative energy continues to flow.

As she prepares for her upcoming arena tour, Bridgers continues to prove that the most resonant art often emerges from vulnerability and genuine connection, whether on the grandest stage or in a quiet acoustic setting.
