Phish crosses 100 shows during next MSG run

There is a palpable electricity hanging over Madison Square Garden whenever Phish takes the stage. For those who work at the arena, the experience transcends a mere concert; it becomes an immersion into a strange, joyous universe. Longtime employees speak of an atmosphere that is more than just organized dance—it is a unique ecosystem where the audience and the band coexist in a magical rhythm.

This deep connection is about to reach an astonishing milestone. After three decades, 99 performances, and countless memories, Phish is gearing up for its 100th appearance at the iconic venue. The celebration culminates in a four-night New Year’s run, kicking off on December 30th and concluding with the band’s historic 100th performance on January 2nd.

To capture this unique energy, a recent video spotlighted the arena staff, showcasing the decades of history they have witnessed. These employees are living witnesses to Phish’s incredible journey, having spent years greeting fans, pouring drinks, and absorbing the delightfully wacky themes that define the band’s legacy.

The history between Phish and the Garden is rich and layered. Staff members have dedicated decades to the venue, with some working there for over three decades, while others have been there for nearly three. One staffer has attended every show since the band first arrived in 1994, marking the span of 32 years and three days until the landmark 100th event.

These interactions reveal a fan base that feels integrated into the performance itself. Staffers described watching fans interact with them, giving high fives and sharing the collective joy that surrounds the music. Memories range from seeing the band live in 1989 to being dazzled by a show-opening “Carini” at a first show in 1989.

Phish’s history with the Garden is packed with unforgettable moments, including 17 New Year’s Eves celebrated at the MSG, and a previous Baker’s Dozen residency that featured 237 songs across 13 consecutive shows. This run is a testament to the band’s enduring appeal and the arena’s enduring magic.

The upcoming New Year’s run is set to be an event full of spectacle and surprise. Beyond the four nights at the Garden, the band is hitting the road with shows across Virginia, Florida, and Alabama. Following the MSG dates, Phish will stage its 10th annual event on January 27th through 30th at the Riviera Maya destination in Cancún.

The New Year’s run will feature eight Phish sets, supplemented by late-night DJ gigs from James Murphy and Questlove, alongside comedy performances from Fred Armisen, Rory Scovel, Beth Stelling, Ali Macofsky, and Phil Hanley. It promises to be a spectacular celebration.

Adding to the festive atmosphere, Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio and bluegrass star Billy Strings are teaming up for special concerts this fall. Both artists will be backed by the Trey Anastasio Band, with all proceeds benefiting the Divided Sky Foundation, which supports affordable and accessible addiction care.

Fans can secure their spots for the New Year’s run during the ticket request period, which ends at noon ET on October 12th. General public tickets will go on sale at noon ET on October 16th.
