From Ticketing Giants to Venue Management: Phil King’s Next Chapter

The world of live events and venue management is buzzing with a notable career shift, as Phil King transitions into a new leadership role. The former Ticketmaster Australia managing director is now steering the ship as the chief executive officer of Dunedin Venues Management.

King brings a wealth of experience from the high-stakes world of ticketing and commercial operations. Prior to taking the helm at Dunedin Venues Management, he led Ticketmaster Australia, one of the major ticketing entities in the region, a role he held since December 2023. This experience was built upon earlier leadership roles, including serving as the chief commercial officer for the South Australian Cricket Association.

His time leading major ticketing operations, particularly with Ticketek Australia—a division of the Sydney-based ticketing, live content, and data analytics giant TEG—was described by King as an incredible chapter in his professional life. He reflected on the challenges and growth this period provided, noting that leading the business shaped and challenged him immensely.

While reflecting on his tenure with Ticketek, King expressed genuine excitement for the future of the organization. He credits the team, including CEO Cam Hoy and managing director Amy Mackie, with doing an outstanding job in aligning the business and setting it up for future momentum.

The shift to Dunedin Venues Management reflects a focus on connecting with the vibrant atmosphere of the South Island. The organization behind Dunedin Venues, which manages iconic facilities such as the Municipal Chambers building and the Dunedin Town Hall, alongside the 36,000-capacity Forsyth Barr Stadium, felt a strong pull to partner with King, citing the region’s reputation as a world-class destination and its passionate sporting community.

King’s journey highlights how high-level commercial expertise can be leveraged across different sectors. Whether managing the distribution of tickets for major international events or overseeing the management of historic venues, his career demonstrates a deep understanding of the ecosystem that makes major events successful.
