Pet Shop Boys Salute Alan Turing on ‘A Man From The Future’ Stream Now
A Man From The Future: The Pet Shop Boys’ Poignant Look at Genius and Tragedy
When the British electro-pop duo Pet Shop Boys released A man from the future, they didn’t just drop an album; they opened a chronological journey through the life and legacy of Alan Turing, the visionary mathematician widely hailed as the father of modern computing.
Arriving at midnight, the sprawling concept album acts as a musical memorial, exploring eight pivotal chapters in Turing’s life—from his formative years and scientific passions to his pivotal role in World War II, his groundbreaking work in cryptography, his realization of his sexuality, and ultimately, his tragic end.
The project, a rich tapestry of electronic music and evocative string arrangements, was a collaboration between the Pet Shop Boys and composer Sven Helbig. To give the narrative depth, Juliet Stevenson contributed spoken words drawn from Andrew Hodges’ acclaimed book, Alan Turing: the Enigma.
The genesis of the work extended beyond the album. Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe initially worked with Hodges in 2012 and 2013, setting the groundwork for this epic musical story just before the theatrical release of The Imitation Game, which brought Turing’s story to the screen with Benedict Cumberbatch.
More than a decade later, the duo revisited the material, updating and rearranging it with fresh electronic textures and orchestrations by Helbig, giving the narrative a renewed, shimmering quality.
The music unfolds precisely through Turing’s journey: capturing his intellectual drive, his exploration of his identity, his time at Cambridge, his crucial work in unlocking the German Enigma machine during the war, his role in the birth of the digital computer, his speculation on Artificial Intelligence, and the personal struggles he faced regarding his homosexuality, culminating in his suicide in 1954.
“Our motive in creating this work was to make a musical memorial to Alan Turing who gave so much to his country and the world and was rewarded for it by being prosecuted for his sexuality,” the Pet Shop Boys stated, underscoring the album’s profound emotional purpose.
The theme of the album is deeply resonant. It celebrates Turing’s monumental contributions to the defeat of Germany and his pioneering imagination of a world with intelligent machines. It also reflects on the era he lived in, acknowledging that he was ahead of his time in both his professional achievements and his personal understanding.
A man from the future followed their previous release, Nonetheless, which had achieved significant success in the UK charts. The Pet Shop Boys have built an impressive career, accumulating 22 top 10 singles, including four No. 1 hits, and ten top 10 albums in the United Kingdom. Internationally, they have enjoyed numerous hits on the Billboard Hot 100, including a US No. 1 with their 1986 song “West End Girls.”
