Paul Kelly returns to Kings Cross for a one-off show

Paul Kelly is set to make a nostalgic return to Kings Cross, announcing a one-night-only performance at the Potts Point Hotel on August 30th. This event connects the contemporary Australian songwriter with a piece of his own musical mythology, taking place steps away from the historic venue where he first honed his craft in the mid-1980s.

The location itself carries significant weight for Kelly. The Potts Point Hotel sits beside the laneway that once housed the Manzil Room, a legendary late-night haunt where Kelly frequently played during the mid-to-late 1980s. He recalls those sessions as a wee hours sticky-carpet venue, attracting a diverse mix of musicians and denizens of the night—street workers, bohemians, and off-work artists.

During those times, Kelly and his band would play three sets starting around 1am, with even notable visitors like painter Brett Whiteley dropping in to listen. Reflecting on that era, he muses that the old Manzil Room now exists as a block of apartments, wondering if the residents sometimes hear the faint echoes of their music and chatter.

This deep connection is physically visible today, as a recently completed mural by artist Scottie Marsh adorns the exterior wall of the Potts Point Hotel, serving as a modern tribute to Kelly’s enduring presence in the neighbourhood.

The upcoming show is more than just a concert; it is a launch. To celebrate this return, Kelly will release a deluxe edition of his 2025 album Seventy just two days before the gig. Adding to the celebration, Kelly is also marking the 40th anniversary of his landmark 1986 double album Gossip with a special 2LP anniversary reissue. This reissue honors the enduring legacy of his work that defined an era.

Seventy, released last November to commemorate Kelly’s 70th birthday and his 50th year in music, has cemented its status as a major achievement. The album debuted at No. 2 on the ARIA Albums Chart and followed a sold-out Australian arena tour. It represents a decorated career, featuring hits like Life Is Fine (2017) and Nature (2018), alongside enduring tracks such as “To Her Door” and “How to Make Gravy.”

A 17-time ARIA Award winner and ARIA Hall of Fame inductee, Kelly’s catalogue is filled with celebrated songs and a powerful contribution to the performing arts. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2017 for his extensive contributions to music.
