On-stage emergency: Journey Drummer Deen Castronovo suffers
The lights of the BOK Center in Tulsa were momentarily overshadowed by a medical emergency, turning a high-energy rock performance into a scene of genuine concern for one of rock music’s most enduring figures.
During a recent performance by Journey, drummer Deen Castronovo experienced a medical emergency shortly after two songs. The situation necessitated an immediate response, and the show was briefly delayed as the band and crew attended to him.
Amidst the commotion, the response from the band members was immediate and heartfelt. Co-founder and lead guitarist Neal Schon stepped forward to address the audience, asking for prayers for Castronovo. Schon emphasized the importance of support during this time, ensuring the crowd felt connected to the situation.
Schon also confirmed that Castronovo was being rushed to the hospital, and that the band’s drum tech, Steve Toomey, stepped in to fill the role on stage.
Deen Castronovo’s history with Journey is deeply woven into the band’s legacy. He contributed drums and vocals to the group from 1998 until 2015, and later rejoined the lineup. His extensive career spans countless high-profile sessions with legendary figures like Ozzy Osbourne, Steve Vai, Paul Rodgers, and GZR, showcasing a remarkable versatility in the music world.
Castronovo’s presence on the stage brought with it a rich tapestry of rock history. Just a year prior, he had made headlines during a concert at NRG Stadium when a fire broke out beneath the stage, prompting him to reflect on the intensity of live performance.
Journey is currently on their Final Frontier North American tour, expanding their reach with forty additional concerts planned for 2026. This incredible run continues to celebrate their iconic hits, including the enduring success of “Don’t Stop Believin’.”
While the focus remains on Castronovo’s recovery, the concert experience served as a poignant reminder of the human side of stardom. The outpouring of support demonstrated that whether on stage or off, the connection between rock artists and their fans remains profound.
