Omer Netzer: Sad, Sexy, and New Music
The journey of an artist is often a winding path, filled with unexpected turns, but for Omer Netzer, the melody started long before it became a global phenomenon. His musical education began not in a classroom, but on the shelves of a music store in Nahariya, northern Israel, where at ten years old, he was already immersed in the rich tapestry of blues, rock and roll, jazz, and country.
Growing up surrounded by music taught him a profound lesson: music isn’t just entertainment; it’s a language that connects people. As Netzer reflects, growing up with music doesn’t automatically translate into appreciation, but looking back, he realizes just how magical that early exposure was. The store taught him about people—lawyers, everyday folks, and musicians—demonstrating that music is a force that shapes human experience.
This innate curiosity fueled his development. Starting drum kits at six and picking up the guitar at twelve, Netzer quickly found his place in the front of the music. Influences like Eric Clapton shaped his approach, instilling a feeling in his fingers that is purely intuitive, a skill that simply cannot be taught.
His artistic exploration continued through cultural touchstones like Woodstock, where he witnessed the raw energy of musicians like Joe Cocker, solidifying his desire to constantly explore the musical landscape. While he initially considered equine therapy, he eventually found his true calling in writing and recording, stepping into the role of creator.
The pivot into a career path was less linear. After finding success with early songs in Israel, Netzer embarked on a global adventure. Advice from Bon Jovi’s management pointed him toward Nashville, suggesting that the path to true success involved building community and honing his songwriting. This led him to fly between continents, writing and recording, ultimately settling in Nashville.
Today, Netzer’s music has achieved significant traction, accumulating more than 10 million streams and 17 million YouTube views, a testament to his ability to connect deeply with audiences. Yet, his drive remains untamed. He insists that there is no plan B; his success is fueled by an unrelenting hunger to create, write, and express himself in every facet of music.
Netzer views music as the ultimate bridge, a universal language capable of transcending boundaries. He delves into profound questions, exploring the complexities of love, heartbreak, and redemption in his lyrics. With his recent EP, Let It Sing: Side A, featuring the powerful track “Unholy,” he pushes the boundaries, exploring themes of spiritual searching and the balance between faith and experience.
His aesthetic is richly layered, drawing inspiration from artists like Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, weaving in symbolism that hints at deeper truths about control and intense emotion. Whether playing live at festivals or recording sessions in places like Muscle Shoals, Netzer embodies a fluid blend of genres—drawing from the swampy blues of B.B. King and the jazz-infused vibes of New Orleans to craft a uniquely his own sound.
Omer Netzer continues to evolve, always seeking the next creative leap. He reminds us that perfection is not the goal, but the journey of embracing mistakes and loving oneself along the way. As he looks ahead, with more stories waiting to be told, the message remains clear: music is the force that binds us all.
