The world of alternative rock just got a whole lot greener. Winspear has officially welcomed a fresh voice from Aotearoa, New Zealand, in the form of the alternative act Awning.

Hailing from the bustling heart of Tāmaki Makaurau, Auckland, Awning is bringing a raw, deeply felt sound to the international stage. Their arrival marks a significant moment for the label, signaling a successful expansion into the region and a strong connection to authentic, emotional songwriting.

The band’s latest offering, the single “Little Green Book,” dives straight into the messy, beautiful territory of human experience. Frontman Christian Dimick explains that the song explores “grief, gritty stuff that feels almost too much to put into song format,” proving that the most intense emotions can indeed be captured with stark, honest music.

The creation of this track was an intimate affair, recorded at Neil Finn’s acclaimed Roundhead Studios in Auckland. The production was handled by De Sevens, and the accompanying music video was masterfully shot by one of the band members, Damin McCabe.

Awning is a tight, dynamic five-piece, formed in 2023 by Dimick alongside drummer Riley Noonan, bassist Damin McCabe, and guitarists Ethan Broughtan and Eli Chamberlain. They have already established themselves as a formidable live outfit, having shared stages with groups like Twine and Wednesday, and recently performing at New Zealand’s Going Global Festival.

This new signing not only expands Winspear’s roster but also highlights the label’s commitment to discovering exceptional talent across the globe. Jared Jones, founder of Swapmeet, expressed his excitement about the collaboration, noting that Awning possesses a unique ability to distill profound feelings into catchy, unforgettable melodies. ““Little Green Book” is a perfect encapsulation of this emotional truth,” Jones remarked.

For Dimick and the rest of the band, joining the Winspear family feels like a dream realized. “Coming from Aotearoa, it feels like a dream to have someone from the U.S. supporting us,” Dimick shared. “It is an honor to jump on their roster and be part of this incredible team.”
