Ninajirachi, Boy Soda, Keli Holiday shortlisted for 2026 NSW Music Prize
The music world is buzzing with anticipation as the NSW Music Prize prepares to shine a spotlight on the region’s most dynamic and impactful artists. This highly coveted award, which comes with a substantial prize pool, is more than just a trophy—it’s a powerful statement about recognizing the crucial role local music plays in the wider cultural landscape.
The award is structured into three distinct categories designed to celebrate different facets of artistic achievement. The main prize recognizes the NSW artist or act whose release has had the “most significant impact,” carrying an impressive A$80,000 prize, with the winner also receiving a $55,000 winner’s check. Alongside this, specialized awards highlight specific communities and emerging talent, including the NSW First Nations music prize and the NSW breakthrough artist of the year prize, both carrying A$40,000 each.
This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Minns Labor government, aimed at inspiring the next wave of artists in NSW. The goal is to provide essential recognition and momentum to local musicians who often face increasing pressure from cost-of-living challenges and the dominance of global streaming platforms.
A panel of artists and industry leaders thoughtfully selected the nominees, which were announced on October 16th. The final ceremony, scheduled for November 9th at the Museum of Contemporary Art’s Foundation Hall in Sydney, will reveal the winners, decided by a five-person judging panel for the main award and a three-strong First Nations judging panel.
The list of finalists is packed with talent. Contending for the top prize are international-sounding acts like Ninajirachi, Boy Soda, Speed, and Keli Holiday. Other standout nominees include Don West, Esha Tewari, MAY-A, Parcels, The Rions, and ZIPPORAH.
The special First Nations music prize celebrates the rich and meaningful impact of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander artists. Nominees for this category include 3%, KYARNA, ROX LAVI, THOM, and Velvet Trip.
The award also recognizes emerging stars with the NSW breakthrough artist of the year prize, celebrating artists who have had a truly groundbreaking year. This category is open to nominees such as Boy Soda, Esha Tewari, Keli Holiday, RAGEFLOWER, and Velvet Trip.
This prize serves as a vital reminder that local sounds are powerful, distinct, and deserving of celebration. As one industry leader noted, the prize is about helping artists stay the course and become the next big NSW icons, ensuring that the unique voice of the region continues to resonate on the global stage.
