New Gasometer opening performances by Mühlrad & Wessely
Stockholm is preparing for a major cultural transformation, set to welcome a spectacular new venue that promises to redefine the landscape of live entertainment in Europe: the Gasometer.
Scheduled to open its doors in March next year, this ambitious new space will stand as a testament to architectural heritage and boundary-pushing artistic innovation. Named after its striking origins as a gasholder built in 1899 by Ferdinand Boberg, the Gasometer is more than just a building; it is a dramatic conversion of industrial history into a futuristic stage.
The venue, a massive 2,300-capacity space in Stockholm, is set to be operated by the hospitality and entertainment company Miramis. Its design is a masterclass in blending the old and the new, featuring an entirely new, pillar-free theatre constructed within the historic gasholder. Above this, a 1,000-capacity dome space offers an additional dimension for events, allowing the venue to host up to 1,750 seated visitors.
The vision behind the Gasometer is clear: to establish a new benchmark for live entertainment. Julien Planté, the company’s head of entertainment, envisions a space where architectural history meets cutting-edge audio-visual technology and artistic ambition.
This grand undertaking is set to kick off with a stellar opening line-up featuring composer Jacob Mühlrad and visual artist and creative director Alexander Wessely. These two creators bring unparalleled prestige, promising an event steeped in world-class creativity.
Mühlrad, who has garnered acclaim for his work commissioned by the BBC Proms and Radio France, and for composing the music for the 2025 Nobel Prize Banquet, offers a rich blend of classical mastery and contemporary flair. His musical journey has spanned prestigious venues like the Royal Albert Hall and Stockholm Concert Hall, alongside collaborations with global figures such as Swedish House Mafia and 070 Shake.
Wessely joins Mühlrad in this inaugural presentation, bringing his reputation as an acclaimed designer to the forefront. His portfolio includes creating stunning visual art for global superstars like The Weeknd, Rihanna, FKA twigs, and Arca, with his work displayed at iconic global events, including Coachella and the Las Vegas Sphere.
The Gasometer is poised to become a cultural hub, bringing together world-class architecture, live performance, and state-of-the-art technology. It signals a bold move by the entertainment sector, demonstrating that history can be beautifully repurposed for the future. The opening of the Gasometer is not just a launch; it is a declaration that Stockholm is ready to host the next era of artistic spectacle.
