New Found Glory guitarist Chad Gilbert dies
The music world is mourning the loss of a true icon: Chad Gilbert, the legendary guitarist and founding member of the pop-punk powerhouse New Found Glory, passed away peacefully on September 20th at the age of 45.
His passing was marked by profound grief, yet the memories of his vibrant life and immense influence shine brighter than ever. Gilbert left behind a legacy not just in music, but in the spirit of relentless drive and the power of brotherhood that defined his career.
Chad Gilbert’s story is one defined by talent and tenacity. Starting his musical journey as the teenage vocalist for the hardcore band Shai Hulud, he carved out a unique space for himself. Later, he co-founded New Found Glory in the late 1990s, quickly becoming the defining guitarist and principal songwriter for one of the era’s most influential bands. Alongside his bandmates Jordan Pundik, Ian Grushka, Cyrus Bolooki, and Dan O’Connor, Gilbert helped establish New Found Glory as a cornerstone of the early 2000s pop-punk explosion.
His musical contributions were vast, stretching beyond New Found Glory. Gilbert also operated as a prominent producer in the pop-punk and hardcore scenes, lending his touch to acts like A Day To Remember, H2O, and Terror, demonstrating a versatility that defined his creative spirit.
Beyond the stage, Gilbert navigated a tremendously challenging personal journey. For several years, he bravely faced a serious battle with cancer. In December 2021, he revealed that he had undergone emergency surgery following a diagnosis of a rare tumor, which led to further complex health challenges over the following years.
Despite these immense physical struggles, Gilbert remained fiercely committed to his art. He continued to work with New Found Glory, contributing to their latest efforts, including the album Listen Up!, and made an emotional return to the stage in Nashville, performing from a mobility scooter after undergoing emergency brain surgery.
His strength and spirit never wavered. He found joy in his most cherished relationships, celebrating the accomplishments he held dearest—being a husband and a father. The outpouring of grief from friends and family was a testament to the beloved person he was.
As Gilbert peacefully passed away, his bandmates and friends offered heartfelt tributes, acknowledging his pivotal role. They reflected on how his guitar playing, songwriting, humor, and relentless drive shaped New Found Glory for nearly three decades. They noted that his influence will forever resonate on every stage and in every note played.
Chad Gilbert is survived by his wife Lisa, daughter Lily, mother Jackie, and brother Brian. His spirit endures, echoing the powerful music and unforgettable presence he left behind.
