The legacy of Neil Peart, one of rock’s most influential drummers and lyricists, is set to receive a monumental celebration in a new feature documentary this fall. Neil Peart: No One’s Disciple promises to be an intimate look at the artistry and enduring influence of Rush, exploring his unique perspective through rare archival footage, personal reflections, and captivating live performances.
The film premieres on September 23 on CBC, offering a deep dive into the complex world of Rush. Directed by Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn, and produced by Banger Films and Elevation Pictures, the documentary captures the essence of Peart’s genius while highlighting his role as the foundational force behind one of rock music’s most enduring bands.
What makes this project particularly compelling is the constellation of talent featured within it. Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson appear throughout the film alongside an all-star lineup of drummers who have tackled Peart’s famously demanding compositions. This roster includes heavyweights such as Tool’s Danny Carey, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith, and The Police’s Stewart Copeland. These musicians bring a shared history with Lee and Lifeson, having participated in memorial concerts for Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins in 2022, including a tribute featuring Smith and Hawkins that benefited brain tumor research at Cedar-Sinai Medical Center.
Peart himself is routinely celebrated as one of rock’s greatest drummers, renowned for his technical precision, irregular time signatures, and elaborate drum kit work. His mastery has long served as a benchmark for aspiring drummers looking to explore complex percussion. In one of the film’s archival interviews, Peart reflected on the pursuit of musical excellence, stating that it is his responsibility “to play better all the time, and to play my best all the time, to keep it fresh and changing.”
The documentary arrives at an exciting moment for Rush. As bandmates Lee and Lifeson recently returned to the road for the Fifty Something tour, they have showcased a renewed energy under the Rush banner since Peart’s passing in 2020. The film serves as a powerful tribute, connecting Peart’s profound influence with the vibrant, evolving sound of the band as it continues its journey.
